🌊 We must stop eating wild ocean animals, including open‑pen "farmed" saltwater fish such as salmon. https://environment.yale.edu/news/article/exploring-underbelly-chiles-salmon-farming-industry

If you’re not urgently dependent on seafood for survival, simply switch to other options such as land / closed‑system aquaculture or plant based solutions.

I'm not saying everybody needs to become a vegan/vegetarian right now, that is up to each individual, but we should avoid the worst of the worst.

That is, if we want to at least keep a few of the giants of the seas alive. 🦈🐳🦑🐠🐟🐡🐬🦑🪸🦐

Perhaps this feels obvious to some folks but reminder that it takes a number of solutions to combat climate change and urban heat islands

The organizers of a campaign against shark finning in the European Union have filed a formal complaint against the EU Commission, accusing it of mishandling their case and missing deadlines.

In 2023, the EU banned shark finning for all EU- flagged vessels and all vessels in EU waters. However, loose shark fins can still be legally traded — imported, exported or transited — in European countries.

Worldwide, shark populations have plummeted since the 1970s and they continue to be among the most threatened species on the planet.

Environmental organizations are launching a fundraiser to buy land in Big Bear Valley to prevent construction of a planned housing project some say would harm rare plants and wildlife in the area.

Friends of Big Bear Valley and the San Bernardino Mountains Land Trust are trying to raise $10 million by the end of July to purchase more than 62 acres of land pegged for Moon Camp. The project would include 50 lots for custom homes and a marina with 55 boat slips.

Friends of Big Bear Valley said Steers helped negotiate a signed agreement to buy Moon Camp from the property developer, RCK Properties Inc., with the San Bernardino Mountains Land Trust. Friends of Big Bear Valley said negotiating the deal was the "most important priority Steers had."

If the groups raise $10 million by July 31, the acres will be placed under a permanent conservatorship.

"[M]eeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

A PieFed commuity dedicated to promoting sustainability and sustainable development.

For discussion of environmental, climate, clean energy, social, political, and individual action. A place for news, education, questions, and discussions.

Rules:

  1. Don't be a dick.
  2. If it fits an UN Sustainable Development Goal, it's probably welcome.
  3. Links to articles should leverage the original article title. Minor edits in [square brackets] for clarity/to reduce clickbait are probably fine.
  4. We all know corporations & governments are the main problem, and collective action + legislation is the best path forward. That said, someone needs to show support for a more sustainable market - to that end, discussion of individual action is encouraged, and "whatabout big oil" comments in posts about individual action may be removed with prejudice. You're not wrong, but see rule 1.

Not really a rule per se, more of a request: if the article has "Trump" or "Musk" in the title, consider posting it in a USA/Political community to help keep this space focused on sustainability over clickbait political headlines. Political posts are allowed, but discussion should prioritize policies over personalities.
