When I use my phone in my free time I do a mix of things. I browse Lemmy for a bit, check my subscriptions, upvote and comment here and there, and then I close my Lemmy app.

Then I go to my favorite blogs, I read manga, I scroll tumblr, I listen to podcasts and watch youtube videos, and I discover new and interesting things.

Sometimes I find myself thinking "Hey I should share this cool thing with Lemmy!" But I run into some issues. It might be hard to find a good community for it, or they might have restrictive rules.

I once submitted a post to a music community that hadn't had any activity in months. The mod messaged me within an hour of posting to let me know he'd taken it down because I'd broken a rule by not putting the year after the song title instead of before.

So this community is meant to do three things.

  1. Spark the thought, "What have I found outside Lemmy recently that might be fun to share?" Or "What have I created recently that might be fun to post?"

  2. Give people a place to post whatever they want without worrying too much about it.

  3. Get people into the habit of posting. Its fun to build up a streak!

I highly encourage people to crosspost! (And follow that comms rules when you do!!) Want to share a cool manga you found? Post it to c/manga and post it here too! Lots of sleepy communities only get a post every other month. If this comm can spread the activity out then that is great imo.

I've been active on Lemmy for years, even though I've switched accounts due to issues with other instances and privacy reasons. I've built a few different active communities and I enjoy doing it. I'm hopeful that this can be an interesting little corner of the Fediverse. Its a work in progress, and you might see the rules change as I figure out what works and what doesn't. If you have any questions or feedback comment or send me a PM (also I know this breaks the one post a day rule but its a pinned post! Thats a fair exception! Dont ask me to ban myself!)

So today I reached a nice milestone in one of my projects: my work porting classic Mac OS to PowerPC systems with what I affectionately call ArtX chipsets (Nintendo GameCube, Wii, eventually Wii U; the GameCube’s Flipper integrated chipset was very much designed by ArtX as it was effectively finished when ATI acquired the company, and the Wii’s Vegas (and its later revision Bollywood) and Wii U’s Latte are effectively straight successors) reached the desktop for the first time, most likely the first time since the CHRP clone era that someone outside of Apple brought up classic Mac OS on a new system to the desktop. Despite still being nowhere near ready for a public release, I want to talk about the challenges I faced with this project so far.

One of my favorite sci-fi short stories. Scary prophetic for the year it was written.

I've finally convinced my family to calm down on the consumerism and switch to a secret santa exchange.

If you've ever tried to do one yourself you probably ran into problems of SOs not wanting to draw each others names, as well as trying to figure out what people actually want.

I'm sure many people here could probably code up their own solution, but I just wanted to find something prebuilt. Most of the ones I found require you to have everybody make an account, or they find new and creative ways to make the process horrible.

I finally found https://secretsantahat.com/. It worked, wasn't hard, and I'm glad to be done with it. It seems they make their money through affiliate links and premium features, but nothing that bothered me.

I just wanted to share because the process was frustrating, and I only found that decent site because of an old reddit thread. Im not affiliated with them in any way.

If anybody knows anything better, or FOSS please share. I'm sure this site will enshittify, and I'll need to figure something else out in a couple years.

Ive been having a lot of fun taking pics from a low angle, it really makes you see the world in a different way

I also love to capture behind the scenes areas of buildings like this. When you are just walking by it feels like this small, unimportant place. But when you work at a place like this they feel larger, more real. That forgettable gate becomes the one that always gets stuck, the one John got his shirt caught on one time, and oh yeah... etc.

I've gotten really into watching blind playthroughs this year. Its so cool to see a game I love through the eyes of someone who has no experience with it.

A few others that I enjoyed

Zelda 1 blind playthrough (he cheats at the end :[ ) Link

Skyrim blind Link

Kingdom Hearts blind Link

“I think screaming is just more fun with friends,” said Egan, who christened the gathering “Guttural Scream at the Sea” and hung posters inviting strangers to participate.

I've been a KC Green fan for a long time, and was reading Gunshow daily at the time this series originally came out. I fell in love with it at the time and I think its held up very well.
