I have the fairly unpopular opinion that you really can't go wrong with a story about giant mutant carnivorous toads. It's not like you're gonna open something called Night of the Toads! expecting great American literature.
So here we go! This is a fun horror short story. Think B-movie level reading pleasure.
It's 1975 in rural Missouri. Something green comes screaming out of the sky, the local ponds start smelling wrong, fish and birds turn up dead, and a state biologist finds some very strange eggs in the reeds.
Naturally, everybody's about to have a really shit week. This is old-school creature horror. Giant mutant toads. Carnivorous tadpoles. Missing pets. Mangled livestock. A smartass sheriff with a .38. A scientist who probably should've stopped poking at things several horrible discoveries ago.
And the toads just keep getting bigger.
These aren't cute oversized buggers hopping around town, either. They're hungry, mean, grotesque bastards with teeth.
It's short, nasty, violent, and totally absurd. Exactly what a story called Night of the Toads! should be.
