I'm having so much fun learning about all these features of Freebsd. Sudo was so ingrained in me that I never gave much thought to the mechanics of it.

New Host! (lemmy.zip)
submitted 1 week ago by Notamoosen@lemmy.zip to c/FreeBSD@lemmy.zip

I was able to pick up a dedicated machine via Hetzner and am currently working on setting up the base OS. So far so good. Only "catch" so far, was having to request kvm access for the initial os load as there's no image for FreeBSD. They don't offer it permanently, but you can request via the portal to have access for up to 3 hours (longer is a charge). They were very responsive on the request and had it turned on in about 5 minutes.

On Linux I tend to go with KDE as it makes life easier when I bounce back and forth between Windows and Linux desktops. I'd like to try something different with FreeBSD. I'm leaning towards xfce for it's lighter resource usage, but am open to other suggestions.

Caddy Install (lemmy.zip)

Going to be setting up Caddy for the first time as a reverse proxy. Anyone used it on Freebsd, and if so experienced any quirks with it?

Going to begin experimenting with different shells. Fish and zsh are up on the list.

Some excellent resources here.

I was wondering how people's experiences with it went. I'm a fan of Cockpit on Linux to help cut down on the more tedious tasks, and plan on checking this out to see how it compares.

Ansible users? (discuss.online)

I have some ansible roles to manage my FreeBSD machines and was wondering if anyone may have any interest on them to clean them up and make them public. Would also love to see what others have or if you have tried some galaxy modules that have worked well for you.

So far, that are general enough to potentially share, I have

  • freebsd_base -- basic setup
  • freebsd_pf -- pf setup
  • freebsd_bastille - bastille setup

These two I think have the potential, with a little more work, to be good candidates to put on Galaxy for general use

  • freebsd_pf
  • freebsd_bastille

The freebsd_base probably is best as a sample, but will explore generalizing if there is any interest

VPS Hosts (lemmy.zip)
submitted 1 month ago by Notamoosen@lemmy.zip to c/FreeBSD@lemmy.zip

I wanted to to start a thread to see what people are using for VPS hosts for Freebsd. Personally I use Contabo. It's not listed during the initial setup but under other images there is an option for version 14. I know some people have had issues with Contabo, but I've had a lot of success with their US data centers. Feel free to to discuss further and avoid referral links.

Stumbled onto this while researching. Instructions seem somewhat simplified, but it still seems valuable as a starting point.

Automating updates (discuss.online)

Does anyone know of a way to automate updates? What I usually do, manually, is to run:

freebsd-update fetch install

I see on man page one can put cron option to do fetch, but don't see a way to automate the actual install.

Jail Management (bastille.readthedocs.io)

So this is the tool I'm using to manage my jails. It's documentation is very good in the same vein as FreeBSD itself.

I've worked with the various components before but not specifically this. Going to install it in a jail and see what it looks like.

Going to create an email server in a jail using appjails for the first time. In the past I only created thick jails using native tools. Curious to see how using appjails with a thin jail will work.

With the recent changes in US law banning non american router/firewalls, I've decided to take some old hardware and build my own. Trying to decide if I go Opnsense or a vanilla Freebsd install.
