Hello!

Our server was previously hosted in the USA. What does this mean for you? Well not much really. It's mostly just an ideological decision. I've had a ton of signups in the past month of users saying that they're trying to move away from US tech. The server is provided by a company in Montreal, QC. We also have double the ram and a few more CPU cores as we did before along with more storage space while also not increasing costs too much, though we don't really need any of that.

We're also moving away from Cloudflare. Why? We've had multiple hours-long outages due to Cloudflare being down. Also, there's privacy and centralization concerns which are just antithetical to the whole reason that I started a Fediverse instance. Over the past month I've disabled Cloudflare protection and haven't noticed any issues whatsoever, if anything performance seems better. If we start seeing massive bot traffic that hurts performance I may turn it back on temporarily, but so far so good.

We are still using Cloudflare R2 to store our images (and only images), but I am looking into alternatives. I also use them to pay for the domain and manage the DNS records, but I don't believe there's any issue in that. We send our server backups to Backblaze which is in the US however it is fully encrypted before leaving the server so there is no privacy concerns

As a fun aside it seems like every other Canadian hosted Lemmy instance is behind a CDN like Cloudflare, meaning that once join-lemmy.org refreshes our server information we should be the ONLY Lemmy instance listed as being hosted in Canada! Take that, @Shadow@lemmy.ca :P

Thanks for being a member of The Lemmy Club!

If you’d like to help contribute to our ongoing costs, or would like to show some appreciation, you can at OpenCollective: https://opencollective.com/thelemmyclub

This instance is mostly self funded with no return whatsoever. The costs aren’t too high (~$500/yr) but community donations are always very appreciated. At the moment, we’re about 25% community funded. Either way, The Lemmy Club isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

As I'm sure you've already memorized the community rules as if it was your moms birthday, I probably need not post it, but here is rule 6 anyway:

  1. No US Politics.

Please don’t post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !askusa@discuss.online

I am writing this post in an effort to gather feedback on how the community feels about this rule. In short, keep it as it is, or revise it.

It is my personal belief that the main purpose it serves is to avoid the community from mainly revolving around whatever daft thing the orange lardsack last said or did. And while it serves that purpose well, I think it also inhibits some potentially interesting discussions.

For example, one possible revision could be to allow for questions regarding US politics, but with a requirement that the topic has to be regarding issues 25 years ago (that may or may not be relevant today).

Alternatively, would it be useful/entertaining to occasionally have a "Contemporary US politics question megathread" as a contained outlet?

Please let me hear your thunks. This post will stay stickied for "a while".

In statements to Prensa Latina, Briseño Davila described this strategy as a direct legacy of the so-called “Big Stick” policy, associated with the Monroe Doctrine, as well as “Manifest Destiny,” which, he explained, have shaped Washington’s foreign policy toward Latin America and the Caribbean.

The prominent Nicaraguan doctor stated, “It is the same doctrinal matrix that today exacerbates the genocidal blockade against Cuba.

It is the continuation of a reactionary imperial policy, of a cannibalistic capitalism that does not tolerate examples of sovereignty and dignity.”

He considered that Cuba’s greatest “threat” lies in its historical example of sovereignty, self-determination, and social development.

He highlighted the internationalist work of the Cuban medical brigades, particularly the Henry Reeve International Contingent of Physicians Specialized in Disaster Situations and Serious Epidemics, which, he noted, has assisted in more than 60 countries.

Referring to recent US policy, Briseño Davila mentioned President Donald Trump, who declared Cuba an “unusual and extraordinary threat” and tightened the economic, commercial, and financial siege with further sanctions.

Meta, the parent company for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, plans to introduce new face scanning tech while people are distracted by current political turbulence. The Trump-adjacent corporation plans to package the feature in new smart glasses. An internal Meta document seen by the New York Times (NYT) says:

We will launch during a dynamic political environment where many civil society groups that we would expect to attack us would have their resources focused on other concerns.

The media outlet provides further info on what the tech would allow:

The feature, internally called “Name Tag,” would let wearers of smart glasses identify people and get information about them via Meta’s artificial intelligence assistant.

The cynical internal memo likely references the tumult currently sweeping the US amidst the mass criminality carried out by the brownshirts of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Trump’s personal paramilitary goons have been violating laws left and right as they beat and kill their way around the US, under the pretext of an immigration crackdown.

ICE have already made extensive use of face scanning tech. Meta’s glasses would represent another privacy violating move, capturing massive amounts of personal data which may ultimately find its way into the hands of an authoritarian state. Meta has form when it comes to handing over info about customers to governments.

A reminder that as the US continues to threaten countries around the world, fedposting is to be very much avoided (even with qualifiers like "in Minecraft") and comments containing it will be removed.

Image (of a Jamaat e-Islami campaign rally) and much of the information below is sourced from here and here.

In 2024, the government of Sheikh Hasina, leader of the Awami League, was overthrown in a student-led protest movement which was boosted by US interests. In the interim, Nobel laureate and dyed-in-the-wool neoliberal Muhammad Yunus was made president, and introduced a series of economic and political reforms (e.g. IMF packages and banking sector restructuring) which have sidelined the working class and aligned the country with US financial interests. Regardless of anybody's personal feelings towards Hasina (who did indeed make many mistakes and caused many deaths), it is now very clear that the reason why Hasina was overthrown was not due to a humanitarian, anti-authoritarian impulse, but because Bangladesh had at least some measure of sovereignty while she was in power, as she accepted Chinese infrastructure investments. Certainly, the US is perfectly comfortable with genocidal dictators if they are allied with US interests.

Last week, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party won over two thirds of parliamentary seats - the Awami League was banned from participating at all, and worker-aligned parties were either disallowed or decided to withdraw from participating due to repression. I haven't personally been able to nail down what exact economic/foreign policies they want to introduce, but because of what Yunus has set up in the interim, it might not matter that much - the economic stage has been set such that no matter what party took power, they would have to accept a fait accompli. As Vijay Prashad put it, the competition between the parties is reduced to "which faction will administer austerity"?

One of the many upsetting aspects of this election was that the student movement that helped overthrown Hasina have been forced into irrelevance, despite their legitimate grievances. The "Gen Z" protestors, displeased by the prospect of being ruled by the BNP about as much as the Awami League, found themselves with odd bedfellows, and allied with the now-opposition party (the hardline Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami). They are now in a tough bind, lacking much of the necessary left-wing organization to assert a genuine political project.

This is an instructive moment for many people who are desperate for better conditions in countries that are economically struggling, including Iran with its recent protests. If your country has sovereignty from the US, you walk a very dangerous tightrope - how do you organize for better conditions in such a way that it cannot be co-opted by the US to overthrow your government and put something even more terrible in its wake? Shortly after a jubilant revolutionary moment, you are left without influence, power, or even media representation, and now yet further under the repression of Western imperialism. This is one of the many problems that the population of the non-NATO world will need to find ways to overcome.

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.

In his latest book, the paleoanthropologist Ludovic Slimak recounts how, as a young man, he spent his time observing people as he played the bagpipes in a kilt on the dirty streets of Marseille. Driven by an unconscious impulse, he had decided to master the instrument, and he succeeded, even leading a famous band in France. Then his first child was born, he found himself traveling from gig to gig, and eventually, he gave it up. But he was able to earn his PhD with the money he made from music.

The French scientist has been able to spend the last 30 years observing and studying one of the most decisive moments in the history of evolution: the encounter between our species and the Neanderthals, our closest human relatives. One of his latest discoveries is Thorin, a Neanderthal who lived around 42,000 years ago, very close to the moment of extinction. From then on, Homo sapiens became the only human species on the planet.

In his new book The Last Neanderthal: Understanding How Humans Die, Slimak, 52, reflects on the reasons for the disappearance of these human cousins, and what it reveals about ourselves. “It’s a sad book,” he underscores, because despite the latest evidence that Neanderthals controlled fire, created cave art, and had sex and children with our own species — leaving a trace of their DNA in our genome — this scientist from the French National Center for Scientific Research believes they went extinct in isolation and abandonment. Slimak answers EL PAÍS’ questions via videoconference from his beautiful home, where he lives with his wife and two children, halfway between Toulouse and the Pyrenees.

A new investigation examining emails sent between federal investigators and prosecutors has raised fresh doubts over the Department of Justice’s claim that it has released the full cache of Jeffrey Epstein files, suggesting the material made public amounts to just 2% of the data gathered by federal agents.

Channel 4 News reported that internal emails seen by its journalists show federal investigators expected to process between 20 and 40 terabytes of data seized from Epstein’s properties, including his Florida mansion, New York townhouse, and private island.

The broadcaster added that emails between investigators discussed the data “totaling” up to 50 terabytes from the “earliest stages” in June 2020.

In another internal email from 2025, the report continued, officials said that they were “looking at approximately 14.6 terabytes of archived data.”
